David Y. Mitchell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Preservation Center
As Executive Director of the Atlanta Preservation Center, David Y. Mitchell spearheads advocacy, education, and outreach initiatives to protect Atlanta’s architecturally, historically, and culturally signifi cant buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he received the Society of Georgia Archivists President’s Award for his contributions to the University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
Mitchell is a vocal proponent of projects such as the digital survey partnership with Georgia Tech and Georgia State. He also co-led successful campaigns to restore landmarks including Grant Mansion, historic Westside sites, and Vine City’s Black heritage homes through new grants. Beyond his leadership at the Atlanta Preservation Center, David serves on the boards of Friends of Historic Westview Cemetery and the Atlanta Beltline Tax Allocation District Advisory Committee.
The Atlanta Preservation Center is a private, non-profi t organization dedicated to safeguarding Atlanta's rich architectural, historical, and cultural heritage. Since its founding in 1979, the APC has worked to protect signifi cant buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes through a combination of education and advocacy. They off er guided walking tours, educational programs, lectures, and special events like "Phoenix Flies" to raise awareness and appreciation for Atlanta's past, ensuring its stories and structures endure for future generations.
