For Patrina King, Golf Women Mean Business

Terri Phipps Copeland, Rotary of Atlanta West End's program leader for August, presented Ms. Patrina King, founder and leader of Golf Women Mean Business. She’s a golf champion who’s executing a vision for the role of women in golf for fun and as an aid in business. Patrina began playing at the age of 5 in a decidedly man’s game, especially in terms of golf as a way to promote business and as an opportunity to help make business deals. Patrina is articulate about the complexities of woman playing with and competing against men – the clothes, the rules, the innuendos and not-so-subtle-subtleties that are all too clear to women, and sometimes magnified on the golf course. Her dad launched her in golf by telling her to PLAY GOLF! so she did. Once, in trying to land a job, she beat a potential employer and did not get the job. So, she learned customer golf and eventually discovered that men do like those whom they’re challenged by. She’s learned that being good at golf carries many benefits and helps one to be taken seriously. Her golf lessons stress that golf is not easily mastered and that it’s 80% mental and 20% physical. Patrina has written a book entitled Nine Rules for Nine Holes. She says her company serves as an innovative model to inspire women entrepreneurs and career professionals to ‘play outside the box’ when it comes to the sport of golf directly relating to success in achieving business goals. Patrina’s mission is to teach women golf concepts and how to use golf for business. She also uses the game to support inner-city students, create intramural golf teams and help organizations to positively impact young people in character-building programs and healthy life choices – generally, using golf as a learning vehicle. Golf Women Means Business Charities, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) tax-deductible organization and raises money to support programs for children.
